Training on Modern Management of Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala-azar) and Post Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL)

A Training on Modern Management of Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala-azar) and Post Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL) has been held in Dhaka Medical Hospital on 08-05-2018 with following aspect and agenda.  BACKGROUND Although an estimated 40% of VL and PKDL cases are treated at the SKKRC at Mymensingh district, it is very important to train medical college hospitals and the tertiary level hospitals from the affected areas on VL and PKDL management. Currently the tertiary level hospitals have not received any formal training on updated VL elimination strategies, as the programme has only focused their activities at upazila level. Therefore, it is very important to involve them in the current activities of the VL elimination program with particular emphasis on VL and PKDL case management and referral. Moreover, these institutions are an excellent platform to disseminate this elimination related knowledge towards future generations of healthcare professionals and experts.   Through this activity we have proposed to train professionals and advocate front line managers from medical colleges and tertiary level health care facilities in VL and PKDL case management. In addition to this the activity we will set up a web based platform which will contain VL and PKDL related documents like national guideline for VL and PKDL case management; program related reports; publications, factsheets, statistics from WHO South East-Asia Regional Office, New Delhi and World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva; PDF version along with web links of all VL and PKDL related open access published articles and also links of VL and PKDL related web pages. OVERALL OBJECTIVE (AIM) AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP Aim: To aware teachers, doctors of tertiary healthcare...

Training on OUTBREAK MANAGEMENT OF KALA-AZAR IN BANGLADESH

A one day training session on “OUTBREAK MANAGEMENT OF KALA-AZAR IN BANGLADESH” has been conducted at icddr, b, Mohakhali, Dhaka on 05 March, 2018 Training Schedule Venue: icddr, b, Mohakhali, Dhaka Date: 05 March, 2018 BACKGROUND The national VL elimination program has achieved 98% of its target in 2015. The VL burden has come down dramatically as a result of both program interventions and natural trend of the disease. Since VL case load is decreasing and the disease is clustered, the program is focussing their control interventions on limited endemic Upazilas. However, VL cases are re-emerging from Upazilas where cases with PKDL are left unidentified and untreated and where program activities have been stopped. In 2015, there were 420 new cases of VL reported in the country; this gradual decline means that the programme needs to be alert and responsive to a spike in new cases in previously highly endemic areas where there has been a gradual and consistent fall, and also to new cases emerging in areas that were previously considered non-endemic. As time progresses, the geographical spread will further evolve, and strategies to define and deal with these ‘outbreaks’ need to be identified. Furthermore, considering the objective of consolidation phase of elimination programme, it is also important to generate a definition of VL outbreak in Bangladesh and develop an outbreak management guideline accordingly. Considering above issues, the KalaCORE consortium came to address this gap by providing financial support to generate VL specific outbreak management guideline for Bangladesh, composition of outbreak management team under national Kala-azar elimination programme (NKEP) and capacity build up of the team on outbreak investigation....
